Tasting Notes

  • Nose - The nose on this is bold and packed with flavor. Right away, you get notes of stone fruits like plum and cherry, along with vanilla and toasted oak. As you sit with it, hints of almonds and baking spices start to come through, adding even more depth.

  • Palate – The palate starts off sweet with flavors of plums and maple syrup, but then it shifts into darker notes of bittersweet chocolate and a kick of black pepper.

  • Finish – The finish is long and lingering, with oak and leather taking the lead. There’s also a slight drying effect on your tongue that makes you want to go back for another sip—it’s the kind of pour that keeps you coming back for more.

  • Overall – Rich and complex, especially compared to regular Blanton’s.

Food Pairing - Grilled Ribeye Steak

Nav’s Personal Thoughts – Anytime I travel to a new country or state, I always make it a point to check out the local liquor stores—because that’s what any bourbon hunter would do. During our trip to Spain last year, I stumbled upon a whiskey shop just two blocks from our hotel. To my luck, they had Blanton’s Gold and Blanton’s Straight From The Barrel sitting on the shelf at MSRP.

Blanton’s Gold is essentially the same as regular Blanton’s, but it’s bottled at 103 proof instead of 93 proof. That bump in proof, in my opinion, makes a huge difference. The flavors and notes in Blanton’s Gold stand out more—it’s richer, more robust, and just a step above the standard version. For a food pairing, I’d go with a grilled ribeye steak. The smoky and savory flavors of the steak would pair perfectly the Blanton’s Gold.
