Tasting Notes

  • Nose - As soon as Katie nosed it, she said this could easily be turned into a candle—it’s that good. Nothing stands out too strongly; instead, it’s a perfect balance of sweet and spice. I’m picking up notes of vanilla caramel, allspice, and oak, creating an incredibly inviting aroma.

  • Palate – The first sip greets you with a punch of rye spice and alcohol. The vanilla caramel sweetness that was present in the nose takes a backseat, making way for strong notes of rye, cherry, and a subtle hint of smoke. For me it is a great classic representation of a rye.

  • Finish – The finish is short and satisfying, with lingering hints of cinnamon warmth and a touch of leather. While brief, it ties the pour together with a pleasant spice and earthy notes that leave you wanting another sip.

  • Overall – A Classic Rye

Food Pairing - BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich

Nav’s Personal Thoughts – Blue Run Golden Rye was my introduction to the Blue Run brand, and it was love at first sip. For those unfamiliar with Blue Run, you can instantly recognize their bottles by the iconic Blue Run Butterfly. Each expression features a unique butterfly design, which has become a collector's dream.

For me, Blue Run Golden Rye delivers everything I’m looking for in a rye—balance, complexity, and spice. That said, this bottle leans toward the pricier side, so it might not be the best entry point for someone new to bourbon or rye. However, for experienced drinkers and collectors, it’s absolutely worth adding to your collection.

When it comes to food, I’d recommend pairing this rye with a BBQ pulled pork sandwich. The whiskey’s spice and subtle sweetness perfectly complement the smoky, sweet flavors of BBQ sauce and pork, creating the perfect pairing.
