Tasting Notes

  • Nose - The nose immediately takes Katie and me back to the comforting aroma of apple pie, with notes of warm pie spice, fresh apple, and rich caramel.

  • Palate – Full of flavorful, with bold notes of black licorice that bring an earthy sweetness and citrus that adds a refreshing pop to keep the pour balanced. It’s a unique combo that really stands out.

  • Finish – Medium in length, with bold notes of oak and a strong peppery kick that lingers just enough to leave a lasting impression. It wraps up with that classic Kentucky Hug.

  • Overall – Pleasantly Surprising

Food Pairing - Spiced Apple Tart

Nav’s Personal Thoughts – This was my first time trying anything from Detroit City Distillery, and I was pleasantly surprised. A quick search revealed that Butcher’s Cut Bourbon won Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in both 2022 and 2023—and I can see why. This pour delivers bold notes of black licorice, citrus, oak, and a touch of spice, creating a unique and intriguing profile that stands out.

For a great pairing, I’d recommend a spiced apple tart. The warm spices and sweetness of the tart perfectly complement the bourbon’s apple pie nose and oaky finish, making for a fantastic combination. After trying this pour, I’m really excited to dive deeper and see what else Detroit City Distillery has to offer.
